Smoke Detectors | Fall Home Maintenance

Don’t neglect! Smoke detectors protect you from fires, carbon monoxide, and even burnt toast!

Years ago, when you would buy a smoke detector, the only thing that it would/could detect, was smoke. Now we have so many options when it comes to choosing a smoke detector. Your normal smoke detectors are of course still available. Newer versions are available as well and we’re here to show you those options.

You will recognize the photo above as an older style smoke detector.

These detectors can only detect smoke. This is scary for many people because unless you have an alarm specifically for carbon monoxide, chances are the only protection you would have is against fires. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. It has no odor and is not visible to the naked eye, but it is extremely toxic so being exposed to it for certain periods of time can prove to be fatal. This is why it is so important to choose a detector for your home that detects not only smoke but carbon monoxide as well!

In this photo you will see a new style of smoke detector.

This particular one is call the “Nest Protect”. These are considered “smart” smoke detectors in that, they are able to detect smoke and carbon monoxide and are control through your phone. They link to your phone so your are able to run test alarms and such with the touch of a button. No more worrying about burning your toast either. These detectors are able to determine what type of smoke they are sensing. “Nest Protect” has a feature that allows them to tell when their batteries need changed as well. Instead of beeping at 1:00 am, a yellow light will appear notifying you they need changed.

Other options are available for those of you that don’t need something as fancy as a “smart” detector. There are detectors that will sense both smoke and carbon monoxide that don’t have all of the features that “Nest Protect” does. So there is no excuse for not having a carbon monoxide detector in your home. Keep your family safe from all the dangers of smoke, carbon monoxide, and even burnt toast!
